The 21st century has been an astounding success of humanity – we have been building more and higher than ever, the availability of goods and services has been virtually unlimited. Such a dynamic development of the world, however, comes at a price, revealing a host of previously unrecognized threats and challenges: climate change, raw materials shortages, rampant consumerism, socio-economic inequality, the ageing of the world’s population, homelessness, epidemics... Politicians, architects, urban planners, designers, experienced developers, representatives of construction companies and the global capital are some of the authors of the world’s plan for further development. Time for reflection – are we heading in the right direction? What is essential?
