EXHIBITION NUMBER: SW84
The exhibition presents proposed projects of sustainable, ecological adaptation of buildings and the surrounding area of the old engine house in Katowice. The projects realized within the cooperation between the Department of Residential Architecture Design and the Public Utility of the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology, along with the Bona Fides public benefit organisation and the Industrial Heritage Protection Association – Landmark Protection Congress.
The engine house serves as an integral part of the closed-off area governed by the Polish State Railways, and the downtown transport network has been conditioned by the railroads established in the mid-19th century for close to 200 years. The area surrounding the engine house is a central point not only for the city of Katowice but also for the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union (GZM), consisting of 41 municipalities and 2,250,000 residents. An analysis of the latest global trends in designing multimodal transportation hubs for cities and agglomerations of a similar scale leads to the conclusion that the area surrounding the engine house should be considered a potential location for a new station and transfer center. The solution of supporting the reduction of car traffic in favour of public transportation could itself serve as a pretext for creating a modern facility rich in green solutions and surrounded by unique nature in the very heart of Katowice.
